I love Sundays—the opportunity to take a day off, relax, focus on God and my other relationships, and do whatever brings me joy.
Author Nancy Beach says "it's like God gives us our very own "snow day" once a week—a day when we get "snowed in, because school is called off—and we get to do whatever we want that day."
Doesn't that sound wonderful? And fun? And relaxing? You bet!
But too many of us (including me!) don't lean into those days off—we just keep going and going and going. And eventually, we wear out.
Exodus 20:8 should be one of the easier commandments to keep: "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy."
Compared to avoiding idolatry and not coveting your neighbor's spouse or stuff, how hard can it be to take a day off and remember God? Setting aside one day a week for rest to remember that we are set apart as God's people should feel life-giving. And yet in our culture, the Sabbath feels more like a mandate to eat our vegetables—good for our health, but we'd just as soon feed them to the dog if we can get away with it.
What does the Sabbath mean to you? Is it a day of rest or do you just keep going? Take time to go to God's house today & take time to rest.
Happy Sunday to you.
